THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

Digital Public Infrastructure

Digital Public Infrastructure‘ (DPI) refers to the integrated suite of technologies that empowers governments to build 21st century digital nations.

The World Economic Forum defines that DPI “is a set of shared digital systems that are secure and interoperable, built on open technologies, to deliver equitable access to public and/or private services at a societal scale”, and formed through components including:

Digital Identity

Digital IDs provide a single method to confirm an individual’s identity online, and allow individuals to share information about their identity—such as age or nationality—during a transaction.

Data Exchange

A ‘Data Exchange Platform’ (DXP) provides a central system for sharing data between agencies, the middleware required to enable multiple different government applications to share citizen data consistently.

Blockchain

From secured mortgage documents to full Digital Democracy, the Blockchain will play a keystone role in digitizing a nation.

By building DPI that is safe, secure, and equitable, countries can strengthen financial inclusion efforts, bring marginalized people otherwise left out into the formal economy.

From cash transfers and food distribution to tech-led models of education and vaccine delivery, the last decade has seen a surge in the digitalization of public and private sector services.

DPI systems have become critical to enabling meaningful delivery of public and private services and underpinning the achievement of a range of SDGs, including poverty reduction, financial inclusion, and climate resilience.
